Open Dance

David Suivez

Open Dance moves between ecstasy, irritation and silence. Music shifts from physically driving rhythms to dense soundscapes to fragmented voices, samples and unusual breaks. Familiar sounds are slowed down, pitched, looped or deconstructed. Expectations are deliberately subverted so that perception is not consumed but embodied. Inspiration is provided by formats such as Ecstatic Dance and Wild Card – expanded to include an exploratory, experimental element.

The room is almost completely darkened. When visual control is removed, the eyes and evaluation mechanisms relax. Other senses come to the fore: proprioception, balance, inner impulses. Movement arises not from imitation, but from self-perception. The question ‘Who am I when no one sees me?’ becomes physically tangible.
